The upcoming God of War TV adaptation has its Kratos, and while it's a name that has surprised many, it's one that fans of the games will known very well.

Despite God of War's two decades of source material, the TV adaptation for Prime Video will begin with the reboot, focusing on the Norse era.

But while development has been underway since 2022, with writing beginning in early 2024, the identity of our would-be Kratos has been kept under wraps until now.

Fittingly, for an adaptation focusing on the games' Norse era, Deadline has revealed that Kratos will be played by Ryan Hurst, who himself played Thor in God of War: Ragnarök.

Ragnarök was Hurst's first foray into video game acting, earning him a BAFTA nomination, but it came after an impressive career in film and TV.

Following a breakout role in 2000's Remember the Titans, Hurst has gone on to roles such as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy, Li'l Foster Farrell in Outsiders, Beta in The Walking Dead and many more.

Of course, with Hurst's confirmation as Kratos, another major question arises.

With the adaptation following the most recent two games in the series, who will play Kratos's son Atreus?

Both God of War and its sequel, Ragnarök, follow Kratos and Atreus as father and son, journeying to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.

Much of the story plays out through their interactions and character development, with the two helping one another develop, both as gods and humans.

Ronald D. Moore of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and Outlander fame took over as series writer, showrunner and executive producer in 2024, following the departure of the previous executive producers.

He will be joined by Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys), who has signed on to direct the first two episodes in the series.

As for gaming, the next title in the God of War series is reportedly in development at Sony Santa Monica.
