Just a few months on from the release of MGM+'s small-screen reimagining of Robin Hood, Nottingham's most famous outlaw is set to be the subject of another new project – this time an A24 film starring Hugh Jackman in the lead role.

The first trailer for the movie – which is titled The Death of Robin Hood – has just been released, and if the tone of the two-minute teaser is anything to go by, it looks like this will be a rather more brooding version of the iconic tale.

"Would you like to know a secret," we hear a bearded, grizzled Jackman say in a gruff voice at the beginning of the trailer. "People speak of Robin Hood, tell his stories. They're all lies. He was not a hero, he was a murderous brigand."

He then explains that he himself is Robin Hood, while his quotes are accompanied by some brutal images that very much illustrate his point, as we see him carrying out all sorts of violent deeds.

Throughout the trailer we see this older version of the character reflect on his past with great pain, but also see hints of salvation after meeting a mysterious woman played by Jodie Comer – who appears to have saved his life – and a young girl who he seems to take under his wing.

You can watch it in full below:

In addition to X-Men's Jackman and Killing Eve's Comer, the film also includes major roles for Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) and Noah Jupe (Hamnet), while Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski is the man behind the camera.

The official synopsis for the film – which does not yet have a confirmed UK release date – calls it a "darker reimagining" of the classic tale.

It continues: "Set of its time, the film sees the title character grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder; a battleworn loner who finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation."

The Death of Robin Hood is coming soon to UK cinemas.
