Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Gerard Butler stars as the captain of a submarine that's the only thing standing between peace and a nuclear war in this muscular action thriller. There are echoes of the spoof classic Team America: World Police as our heroes grunt and shoot their way through various obstacles. As well as following events underwater, we get to see Gary Oldman yell his way through the movie as a Washington official, while Toby Stephens is machismo personified as the leader of Navy SEALs on the ground. As predictable as every plot point may be, the action is intense and impressive (the sequence set in a deep-sea minefield is particularly anxiety-inducing). Butler is perfectly at home in this genre, delivering clichéd speeches without the slightest hint of irony. While narratively it may not amount to much more than a lot of shouting, there is an old-school charm here that makes Hunter Killer the perfect Saturday night guilty pleasure.
