An underworld hospital for criminals in need of no-questions-asked medical treatment becomes the flashpoint for the settling of old scores in this zesty thriller set in the near future. As Los Angeles burns during the biggest riot in the city's history, Jodie Foster's straight-talking veteran nurse flits between two brothers shot after a botched bank heist (Sterling K Brown, Brian Tyree Henry), a loudmouth arms dealer (Charlie Day), a femme fatale hitwoman (Sofia Boutella), and a shady kingpin (Jeff Goldblum). Writer and first-time director Drew Pearce juggles the protagonists' stories with a deft touch and a script full of killer lines, with the occasional nod to the Die Hard and Con Air playbooks, aided by an ensemble cast on top form. An almost unrecognisable Foster is the standout, her anxious and alcoholic nurse's sharp wit and savvy bedside manner masking painful memories from her own past in this otherwise brash, bang-packed cavalcade of outrageous violence.
