Black comedy starring, written and directed by Alice Lowe.
This twisted British comedy combines pitch-black humour with grisly violence - and the result is very enjoyable. Beginning with a brutal murder in a pet shop, it tells a story that is refreshingly unusual, following a heavily pregnant woman named Ruth (Alice Lowe) as she embarks on a killing spree. Reeling from a tragic incident that destroyed her life, Ruth is hearing the voice of her unborn child, who is coaxing her to commit a series of murders. What follows is dark, funny and gruesome, and it makes some nice observations about the way that pregnant women are treated by society. Prevenge won't appeal to everyone, but Lowe deserves plenty of praise, given that she directed the film while playing the main character, not to mention the fact that she also wrote the script. Oh, and she did all of this while she was seven months pregnant.
