Far from preaching to the converted, this sequel winningly subverts the traditional college comedy while remaining authentically ribald. Scripted by five men, including star Seth Rogen and returning director Nicholas Stoller, it's a surprisingly feminist film that takes on sexism and has a ball doing so. With 30 days before the sale of their house can go through, Rogen and Rose Byrne are once again at the mercy of teenage neighbours, this time in the shape of a rule-breaking sorority led by Chloë Grace Moretz, who teams up with the couple's old nemesis Zac Efron before he switches sides. Moving at a fair old lick, despite revisiting some of its predecessor's comedic ground, Bad Neighbours 2 feels fresh and even incendiary as it frantically tackles taboos, distinguishing itself from its peers by depicting a marriage of (hapless) equals, talking rape culture, tampons, female desire and parenting pratfalls, while refusing to make its gay characters the butt of snide humour. Byrne and Efron are terrific, as in-your-face hedonism and hilarity become a powerful force for good.
