Steve Jobs isn't a typical biopic. Instead of portraying every notable moment in Jobs's life, it focuses on three events: the launch of the Mac in 1984, the launch of the NeXT Cube in 1988, and the unveiling of the iMac in 1998. Each act takes place backstage, unfolding in real time as Jobs (Michael Fassbender) prepares to present these products to an audience. Fassbender doesn't look like Steve Jobs, of course, but he offers a compelling performance, depicting the Apple co-founder as a demanding, single-minded perfectionist. As good as Fassbender is, however, the best thing about the film is the rapid-fire dialogue, which is filled with witty lines and snappy put-downs. Admittedly, there are times when the story feels somewhat contrived, given that Jobs is confronted by the same five people before every presentation. Crucially, though, this is a minor complaint in a thoroughly enjoyable film.
