Disaster horror thriller starring Eli Roth. Six survivors of a Chilean earthquake realise that the worst dangers are ahead as urban society collapses around them.
In this ambitious mix of disaster and horror movie, four tourists and their two Chilean guides are dancing the night away in a crowded Valparaíso nightclub when a massive earthquake hits. Wholesale death, destruction and urban anarchy ensue in a story that's loosely based on actual events experienced by the film-makers (including director Nicolás López and co-star Lorenza Izzo) during 2010. Much of the action is cleverly re-created from real CCTV footage, with co-producer, co-writer and star Eli Roth bringing all his genre knowledge to deliver catastrophe and truly startling, bloody shocks on a tight budget. The set-up is a tad overlong and leering exploitation does enter the frame during an extended rape scene, but, as a Roger Corman-style version of The Impossible, this is still effective and brutally entertaining.
