It has been reported that Neighbours star Stefan Dennis has "signed" for the new series, with bosses said to be "confident" that the actor "will bring in the ratings".

When approached for comment, a spokesperson for Strictly Come Dancing said: "We don't comment on speculation."

Dennis is best known for appearing on the Australian soap Neighbours since its inception in 1985, having taken breaks and returned for brief stints throughout the show's history.

The soap is now nearing its final days, with the programme recently wrapping its final episode as the series comes to an end after 40 years.

Dennis recently shared his thoughts on the series coming to a close, telling TV Tonight that the decision to cancel the show has made "40th anniversary a bit wishy-washy now".

He said: "It's a bit of a shame, because it’s an incredible accolade for an Australian show to say they’ve been going for 40 years other than other than news and current affairs.

"But unfortunately, that’s now being completely and utterly overshadowed by the fact that the show is now on its way out. So the 40th anniversary means nothing now. It’s a bit of a shame."

Dennis is just one of few soap stars who have been rumoured to be taking part in Strictly this year, with EastEnders' Balvinder Sopal rumoured to be signing up for the series, along with Coronation Street's Helen Flanagan with high odds to be taking part.

Fans will have to wait patiently to see who will grace the dance floor this autumn, with casting announcements expected soon.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One and iPlayer later this year.
