2012: Ashleigh and Pudsey

The first of the furry champs, Ashleigh and her dancing dog Pudsey won over the nation with their smart and sassy dance routines. Their first audition, to the Flintstones theme, even had the usually calm Cowell dancing around in his seat.

Since the show the duo has had plenty of success. There's been the Pudsey movie - with BGT judge David Walliams providing the dog's voice - and Pudsey turned out to be the culprit in Ant and Dec's spoof cop skit Who Shot Simon Cowell? during the latest series of Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

2011: Jai McDowall

Scottish singer-songwriter Jai McDowall took home the crown in 2011. Not the actual crown you understand. He didn't pinch it from the Queen at the Royal Variety performance or anything....

Anyway, while he's certainly got an impressive set of pipes on him, his win was slightly over-shadowed by the fact that there'd been a lot of support for the runner up, 12-year-old Ronan Parke. Cowell admitted Jai wasn't one of the favourites coming into the final, but said he'd come in to it "believing he could win". Amanda Holden was slightly more to the point with her thoughts adding: "Of course I'm thrilled for Jai but I have to say that I really wanted Ronan to win."

2010: Spelbound

This year's series was won by gymnastic troupe Spelbound, captivating the judges and crowd alike with their strength and style. The group went on to make several appearances at the 2012 London Olympics. Members of the group went on to partner celebrities in BBC reality show Tumble and other members have toured with stage shows including Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games.

2009: Diversity

Dance group Diversity really shook things up on BGT, heralding a wave of troupes determined to follow in their winning footsteps. Their choreography was clever, their music choices inspired and you'd be hard pushed to find any member of the group out of sync at any point throughout the competition.

Their win was certainly not a sure thing though, the group taking on now BGT legend Susan Boyle in the final. Various tours have followed as well as the group doing their own TV spots, including frontman Ashley Banjo judging on Sky1's talent show Got To Dance.

2008: George Sampson

Not only did George Sampson nail his performances during the 2008 series, he earned the support of viewers for coming back and having another go - Sampson had been denied a spot in the live semi-finals before.

Sampson's had wide-reaching success since, with parts in films as well as long-running TV shows - the latest being Emmerdale.

2007: Paul Potts

Who could ever forget the series' first ever winner? Paul Potts, who had until then worked in a phone shop, came on, sang Nessun Dorma and changed his life - and the life of BGT - forever. He's still the audition against which all operatic acts are measured against.

His debut album One Chance topped the charts and his story later hit the big-screen with James Corden in the lead role.
