Episode 2: Episode 2

Summary

Emma meets Sara and Jake, a newlywed couple in labour with their first baby, along with Beth, who is expecting her first child with her partner Chloe.

Review

The responsibility of being a maternity care assistant is beginning to dawn on Emma Willis. “It’s such important stuff. It’s real life, not pretend telly life,” she says with disarming honesty.

On shift in the birthing unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Emma meets a newly-wed couple about to have their first baby. I say “about to”, but it takes 36 hours of labour before the final push. However, Emma doesn’t shy away from the blood and guts of childbirth – she’s in theatre for Lucy’s elective caesarean and impressively isn’t the slightest bit fazed by the op – but she’s not there when a birth suddenly becomes a life-threatening emergency.
