Perhaps to dispel rumours to the contrary, Microsoft has now confirmed the next Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix.

We're nearing the end of Xbox's fourth generation of consoles, with the Series X/S launching in November 2020.

But what can we look forward to in a new era of Xbox gaming?

Here's what you need to know about Project Helix.

Xbox Project Helix release date speculation: When could the new console come out?

Xbox Project Helix is currently slated to release at some point in 2027.

This was confirmed in the February earnings call for chip manufacturer AMD, in which CEO Lisa Su stated that they were working on a chip for the console, with work "progressing well to support a launch in 2027".

That being said, we know almost nothing about when in 2027 it could launch, and considering the chip and RAM supply issues facing many companies at the moment, such as Valve, there is every chance that this could be pushed back into 2028.

What to expect from Xbox Project Helix

At the time of writing, we know next to nothing about Project Helix, as Microsoft is keeping most things under wraps.

What we do know, thanks to confirmation from Microsoft's new gaming chief Asha Sharma, is that Project Helix will play both Xbox and PC games.

A hybrid console had long been rumoured as the next Xbox console, with this news confirming that Xbox plans to continue its path towards creating a unified gaming ecosystem spearheaded by Xbox Game Pass.

And unfortunately, that's about all we know about Project Helix so far. Sharma also confirmed that the console will "lead in performance," but that seems like a no-brainer for a next-gen console.

We do know that Microsoft will be talking more about the console in the upcoming Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, so hopefully we'll have more news in the not-too-distant future.
