As Pixar fans head out to the cinemas this weekend to see the animation studio's latest film, Hoppers, a whole host of updates have been unveiled regarding some upcoming sequels.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the news that a third Monsters Inc. film is in the works. It is unclear exactly what form that film will take as it is only in early development, but it would follow on from the 2001 original, 2013 prequel film Monsters University and sequel Disney+ series Monsters at Work, which ran for two seasons between 2021 and 2024.

This news came from an interview with Pixar Studios boss Pete Docter in the Wall Street Journal. In the interview, he also revealed that the already announced Incredibles 3 is set to be released in 2028, while Coco 2 will be released in 2029.

Docter also revealed two new original films are in the works - one, the studio's first ever musical from Turning Red director Domee Shi, the other, Ono Ghost Market, a film inspired by Asian myths about supernatural bazaars. The latter was originally set to be a streaming series, but is now being turned into a movie.

Disney declined to confirm the raft of news from Docter's Wall Street Journal profile, meaning the 2028 and 2029 release dates for Incredibles 3 and Coco 2 are not yet official.

The only other films currently on Pixar's release schedule are Toy Story 5, which will be released this summer, and Gatto, a film set in Venice following a black cat named Nero.

When it comes to Incredibles 3, that film will be the first in the franchise not to be directed by Brad Bird, who will still return as a writer and executive producer. Peter Sohn will step in as director.

Earlier this year, Elastigirl star Holly Hunter said that she is set to start recording the dialogue for the film in March, meaning she could now have already begun.

Hoppers is out in UK cinemas now.
