Drama based on a true story starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis. In a former mining village in South Wales, bartender Jan sets out to breed a race horse by forming a racing syndicate of locals. Helped by her husband Brian and tax adviser Howard, Jan dreams of competing with the elite racing stables for a top prize.
A local racehorse runs against much fancier competition in this distinctly Welsh underdog sports drama. Based on the true story told in the documentary Dark Horse (2015), it casts Toni Collette as bartender/clerk Jan, who, along with dutiful unemployed husband Brian (a skilful turn from Owen Teale) sets out to breed a thoroughbred via a racing syndicate funded by townspeople. Helped by tax expert Howard (Damian Lewis), Jan silences naysayers as her enthusiasm - and sound research - begins to make the impossible happen. TV director Euros Lyn (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) and an exquisite ensemble cast create a dramatisation that is much more fun than it might be, with Sian Phillips headlining a wealth of memorable Welsh actors. Like a four-legged Full Monty, Dream Horse is a rousing, emotional film that earns its cheers and tears without ignoring real-life logic.
