The Doctor was a very different person in his first incarnation compared with the heroic character we know today says Mark Gatiss, the Doctor Who writer and creator of An Adventure in Space and Time.
“He was much more of an antihero,” said Gatiss, whose drama about the birth of Doctor Who will tell the story of actor William Hartnell, who played the First Doctor.
“It’s mostly the personal journey of William Hartnell and his relationship with [Doctor Who producer] Verity Lambert,” said Gatiss of the show. “Eventually he had to leave, and none of us like to find that we are replaceable.”
Gatiss announced earlier this week that Harry Potter actor and one-time Doctor Who guest-star David Bradley is to play Hartnell in An Adventure in Space and Time, adding that he had had him in mind for the role “for years”.
The drama will air this year as part of the BBC's celebrations of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary year.
