Intelligence and subtle wit inform debut director Lorene Scafaria's heartfelt look at unlikely romance blossoming in the shadow of Earth's obliteration by a giant asteroid. As the final countdown begins, the ensuing chaos throws together Steve Carell, who wants to track down his long-lost love, and neighbour Keira Knightley who's trying to reach her faraway family. Both actors put in immensely appealing performances that explore the pain, value and delight of humanity, while Scafaria (writer of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist) adeptly balances the humour and pathos, wringing genuine laughter and emotion from her slyly etched but ominous backdrop. There are some terrific stand-alone scenes, including a wear-what-you-want/do-what-you-like dinner party and the stay-open restaurant where the staff are as available as the food. Another key element to the film's success is the choice soundtrack; after this, vintage standards by the Hollies, Herb Alpert, Beach Boys and Walker Brothers may just be on your "Last song to hear" list, too.
