Just when we thought our excitement for Stranger Things season 5 had peaked with the release of the trailer yesterday, now Netflix has treated fans to a veritable feast of first-look images also.

As well as getting glimpses of the group and many of the beloved characters, the batch of new pictures also provides our first look at Linda Hamilton's Dr Kay.

Similar to the trailer, we get our first insight into the new character, but with details still thin on the ground as to who she is exactly, we've been left to piece together some clues.

The image and trailer hint at Dr Kay being some kind of high-ranking character, possibly within the government or military.

The image itself shows Hamilton's Dr Kay drawing a gun as she rounds a corner in what looks to be a warehouse or secure building.

Like in the trailer, we also see Kay storming through what looks to be the same building, with armed officers leading the way and clearing a path ahead of her.

While we don't have concrete answers on the enigmatic new character just yet, it's safe to say our interest is piqued.

Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, and Noah Schnapp as Will Byers in Stranger Things all putting their hands in the middle of the group and looking at each other while standing in the woods.

Previously talking about her casting in the show, which is a personal favourite of the Terminator actress, Hamilton told US Weekly!: "I've watched every season with relish. I just love it. So it's kind of, like, imposter syndrome where I don't [feel that I] fit in there. That's a whole world set in the '80s.

"When you really buy into something, you don't see yourself in it. So I think, in a way, it kind of ruined the show for me.

"I never watch [a project] once I'm in something. It would just completely take me out of the reality of it to see myself in there. So, I won't be watching [season 5]."

As for the rest of the revealed images, there's plenty else to keep us talking until the first batch of episodes lands this November.

Images show the gang of Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Will (Noah Schnapp) getting back together, as well as Lucas being there for Max (Sadie Sink) by her hospital bedside.

We also see a particularly enthusiastic-seeming Erica (Priah Ferguson) back at school and in the classroom, while another picture teases a midnight discovery led by Will and Robin (Maya Hawke), who look to have stumbled across something together.

You can view the new images for yourself in the gallery below.

While there are plenty of questions swirling about this final instalment of the series, we know our search for answers will be drawn out, with episodes landing in November and on Christmas Day, before the finale drops on New Year's Day.

The official synopsis for Stranger Things season 5 is as follows: "The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown.

"Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread.

"The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time."
