Fans have recently been speculating about a certain trailer in which Steve (Joe Keery) says to Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) that he is ready to die. And, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer brothers responded to such speculation.

"People are always worried about Steve," said Ross.

"It doesn’t matter. We could have put nothing in the trailer and people would still be freaked out about Steve," added Matt.

When asked about how worried fans should be about the fate of their favourite characters, including Steve and Hopper (David Harbour), Matt said: "It’s not Game of Thrones. We’re not in Westeros.

"I love Game of Thrones, but it’s just a very different type of show than that. There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation.

"I think some things happen in the finale that are very surprising, but we’re not trying to shock or upset anyone. I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens, and that it doesn’t feel painful but feels satisfying."

He continued: "We’ll see. But as for Steve’s fate. I don’t know. I can’t say. It would be the next logical step. He keeps getting beaten up more and more. The only way we could take it further is death."

The finale, which is set to air on New Year's Eve in the US and the following morning in the UK, will see the kids of Hawkins preparing for one last showdown with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), as they try to destroy his "ultimate plan" to reshape the world using twelve children he considers the "perfect vessels". With the stakes higher than ever, there could be serious consequences for several fan favourites.

So, will Steve be safe? Will Hopper? There's no telling just yet. But with no major character deaths thus far in this final chapter, fans are eagerly anticipating the conclusion of this decade-long sci-fi saga.

Stranger Thing season 5 will conclude on New Year's Day.
