After being teased in the show a couple of times over the years, Tech Jacket finally made their debut in the Invincible series via episode 5 of season 4, and the character’s surprising gender-swap has taken place for one big reason, revealed right before Mark and co head into the Viltrumite War.

Originally Zack Thompson in the comics, Tech Jacket in the TV adaptation of Invincible is now Zoe Thompson, and it turns out her voice actor is one you’ll likely have heard before.

After getting into why Tech Jacket was gender-swapped, we’ll dive right into who the new female Tech Jacket’s voice actor is and how she compares to her male comic counterpart, wielding the Gelderian armour.

Why was Tech Jacket gender-swapped in Invincible season 4?

Stepping away from the male Zack, Tech Jacket was gender-swapped to the female Zoe Thompson for Invincible season 4 because the show’s bosses thought it would be an "interesting" change and would bring more to the show as a result of the character now being a teenage girl — putting in some added contrast by being more unique amongst the team of heroes.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Invincible creator and co-showrunner Robert Kirkman said that when it came time to bring the Tech Jacket into the show, he realised that a comics-accurate version would be “very similar to Mark”.

From there, the creative team decided early on that it would be interesting to gender-swap the character and rethink who this version of Tech Jacket should be as Zoe, rather than Zack.

Kirkman also suggested that changing the character opened up “exciting things” in the story and praised the energy the new version brings.

In other words, this was not a change made for shock value or as a one-line twist in episode 5; it was a deliberate creative decision made as part of adapting the character for television.

Who voices Tech Jacket in Invincible?

With season 4 episode 5 as her first appearance in Invincible, Tech Jacket. – now Zoe Thompson – is voiced by Zoey Deutch — who is known for playing Harper Moore in Set It Up, Infinity Jackson in The Politician, Juliet Martin in Ringer, and Maya Bennett in The Suite Life on Deck.

The actor is best known for projects including Harper Moore in Netflix romcom Set It Up, Infinity Jackson in political comedy-drama The Politician, and earlier TV roles such as Juliet Martin in Ringer and Maya Bennett in The Suite Life on Deck.

Joining Kirkman’s comments about the benefits of gender-swapping Tech Jacket’s character from male to female, fellow co-showrunner Simon Racioppa was equally enthusiastic about the reimagining, saying Deutch’s performance especially brought humour, professionalism, and a strong grasp of the character.

Who is Tech Jacket in the Invincible comics?

For viewers who have not dipped into Kirkman’s wider comic universe, Tech Jacket is one of the more significant heroes orbiting the Invincible mythos.

In the comics, Tech Jacket is Zack Thompson, a high-school student who comes into possession of advanced alien armour after encountering a dying member of the Geldarian race. The suit bonds to him permanently and turns him into an extraordinarily powerful hero.

As an Earth-based newcomer to the Coalition’s side, he’s essentially a teen wielding a battle suit that makes him a mix of Iron Man, Green Lantern, and Blue Beetle.

Does the gender swap change Tech Jacket’s story?

Outside of surface-level line changes and a few specific jokes, no major changes to Tech Jacket’s story will likely come up in light of Invincible season 4’s gender swap.

As far as first impressions from her first appearances go, Zoe is set to fulfil the exact same narrative Zack did in the comics: joining the fight against the Viltrumite Empire and becoming part of the wider ensemble of heroes gathered by Allen and Omni-Man.

On the other hand, the very subtle bit of flirting we’ve seen between Zoe and Oliver so far could lead to a romantic dynamic as time goes on, but there’s nothing hinting that she won’t carry out all the major story points her original male counterpart from the comics had — while still being more unique to Mark and the rest of the team, this time around.

Invincible season 4 is streaming now on Amazon Prime.
