It's been over a year since the first season of 3 Body Problem debuted on Netflix, but finally production has officially started up again.

Filming has begun on season 2, with a third and final season expect to be shot with it back to back. The new seasons will once again come from the show's creators David Benioff, DB Weiss and Alexander Woo.

Meanwhile, two new castings have been announced, with Claudia Doumit (The Boys) and Ellie De Lange (Wolf Hall) joining as series regulars.

Doumit will be playing Captain Van Rijn, while De Lange will play Ayla. More casting for the new seasons is sure to be announced in due course.

Of course, fans can look to the Remembrance of Earth’s Past books by Chinese author Cixin Liu for a sense of where the show will go following its season 1 cliffhanger, but for now the only information we officially have about season 2 is this short logline: "As the alien invasion nears, humanity prepares - on Earth and elsewhere."

While we don't yet know exactly who from the central cast of season 1 will return, we would imagine stars including Jovan Adepo, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly and Benedict Wong could come back, given where we left off with their characters.

However, we do know that fans can certainly get excited, as Benioff previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the second book is "far better than the first", and suggested that season 2 would also be superior to season 1.

"At our first Comic Con [for Game of Thrones], someone asked if we’re going to get a second season. I remember saying there’s a scene that would happen in season 3 — I didn’t even want to name it, but 'RW', for people who know — if we can get there, I think we’re going to be OK," he said.

"And there’s a scene in the second season [of 3 Body Problem] that I feel is... it’s not the Judgment Day scene [in season 1] — it’s one that happens in the second season… things wildly escape, and there’s one scene, if we get to it, we’re golden — like when we got to the Red Wedding on Thrones."

3 Body Problem season 1 is available to stream on Netflix now. Sign up for Netflix from £5.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
