While on the face of it, Mint may have seemed like a classic Romeo & Juliet tale, the eight-part series certainly took us all on a creatively shot rollercoaster journey as things closed in for Shannon (Emma Laird) and her family.

Marking the TV debut of Scrapper writer and director Charlotte Regan, the series may also tow the line of being a crime drama but its relationships are the central focus of the show.

When chatting exclusively with Radio Times about what inspired her to craft Mint, Regan said: "I think it came from loving that stuff – I love gangster films, I love crime TV – but wanting to see more about the intimate moments between what we see on screen."

With all eight episodes now available to stream on BBC iPlayer, many may be left wondering if that cliffhanger will lead to anything more. Read on for everything we know so far about Mint's potential second season.

Will there be a Mint season 2?

As of now, the BBC have not announced whether Mint will be renewed for a second season.

However, with things ending on a cliffhanger at the end of the finale, things are set up quite well for further instalments.

When asked whether she'd be interested in doing a second season of Mint, Regan told Radio Times: “I’m just having time off. You almost kind of need space from it and you almost want audiences to take control of it and tell you what it is in lots of ways. You do and you don't, to then know how you're feeling about it.”

When could a potential Mint season 2 be released?

The first season of Mint was commissioned back in 2024, with filming kicking off in early 2025 after casting had been officially announced.

With the series having been released in early 2026, we'd expect that if Mint were to be renewed for a second season, we could see it hit screens some time in 2027 if it follows suit on a similar schedule.

Of course, with the series not having been renewed just yet, you may have to watch this space.

Who could return for a potential Mint season 2?

As for who could return for a potential second outing of Mint, we'd expect all the main players to reprise their roles – and some notable departures.

Despite being the co-lead of the series, Benjamin Coyle-Larner's Arran was tragically killed at the end of the fourth episode. While he did reappear in apparitions and visions that Shannon had, it was the end of the road for the character's story.

So, if Mint were to be renewed, we'd not expect to see more of Coyle-Larner, unless he did continue to appear in fleeting sequences.

The cliffhanger of season 1 was also the fate of Neil Leiper's Sam, who had taken over the family business after Dylan (Sam Riley) stepped down. However, with Shannon finding out that it was Sam who killed Arran, she took on the responsibility of exacting revenge and we saw her take a fateful shot at Sam in the show's final moments. But did she actually kill him? We'd assume so and would then anticipate that's the last we're seeing of Leiper.

As for others who could make a return, we'd obviously expect Laird's Shannon to return, as well as other matriarchs Ollie (Lindsay Duncan) and Cat (Laura Fraser). After Dylan's secrets were revealed, we'd also expect to potentially see more of his partner Tom (played by It's a Sin and Dinosaur star David Carlyle) who is undergoing treatment for cancer – something we'd expect to be explored further.

The Mint cast we'd anticipate returning for a potential season 2 are as follows.

  • Emma Laird as Shannon
  • Lewis Gribben as Luke
  • Laura Fraser as Cat
  • Sam Riley as Dylan
  • Lindsay Duncan as Ollie
  • Connor Newall as Liangelo
  • David Carlyle as Tom
  • Clive Russell as Andy

With Regan not revealing any concrete plans for a potential second season, we're sure there are plenty of jump-off points and loose ends that could be explored further.

Seeing as Shannon took things into her own hands and got revenge for Arran's murder by killing Sam, could we see her at the forefront of the family business? We saw how Dylan wrestled with the role, which was pushed on him by his father Andy (Clive Russell) but will he continue on in his new 'clean' life with Tom or will those dark forces pull him back?

Once Dylan's secrets were revealed, things pretty much imploded for Cat who was left reeling by her husband's decisions. But with her daughter making major plans for the future of the family alongside Cat plotting away with Ollie (Lindsay Duncan), we could potentially see these three generations of women helming things.

Speaking about Ollie's character, Regan told Radio Times: “I think I always look forward to people seeing Ollie's moments, and seeing Lindsay as Ollie. It feels different to other things I've seen her in. Even the first day I saw her on set, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that's a proper transformation.’

"So, I think I get excited for people to meet Ollie. I would love a little Ollie goes to Ibiza spin-off, if the BBC will fund it. Just all about Ollie on like a lads on tour kind of holiday, pints, pints, pints.”

Mint will begin airing on BBC One at 9pm on Monday 20 April, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer that day at 6am.
