Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac will continue attempting to push their Welsh football club Wrexham AFC to the very top of the sport –and FX/Disney+ will be following every step of the way for at least three more years.

Your eyes don't deceive you: heartfelt sport docuseries Welcome to Wrexham has earned a rare triple-renewal, meaning its future is secure up until season 8 (due in 2029).

By that time, it's quite possible that the small club in north-east Wales will have ascended to the Premier League, following unprecedentedly rapid progress from the fifth tier to the second tier of English football in recent years.

The turnaround in fortunes came after Hollywood stars Reynolds (of Deadpool fame) and Mac (formerly McElhenney, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) stepped in as co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, which is the third-oldest professional team in the world.

Evoking fictional heart-warmer Ted Lasso, the underdog story of optimistic Americans in a distinctly British setting has clearly struck a chord with viewers – who can now rest assured that this journey has plenty of road left to travel.

Mac and Reynolds said in a statement: "A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history.

"We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come."

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad added: "When we launched Welcome to Wrexham, we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV's most successful and beloved docuseries.

"This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they've built with fans around the world."

Welcome to Wrexham season 5 is due to premiere on Disney+ on Friday 15 May 2026, beginning with a double-bill, before scaling back to a schedule of one episode per week.

The synopsis teases: "Dedicated staff and supporters celebrate the team’s climb toward the Premiership while bracing against naysayers who cheer for potential relegation. Will Wrexham AFC rise to the challenge and prove they deserve their place among the elite?"

In addition to the men's side, the forthcoming episodes will also follow the fortunes of the women's team.

It continues: "With a new coach and a permanent home, Wrexham AFC Women's Team continues to battle amongst the top teams in the Welsh Adran Premier League... building on the groundwork they've laid in previous years."

Welcome to Wrexham is available to stream on Disney+. Sign-up to Disney+ from £5.99 a month.
