Announced at American tech show CES, LEGO has unveiled three new LEGO Star Wars sets to launch the Smart Play system. These sets will be able to emit lightsaber sounds, flashing lights and even Star Wars music in real time as you move and play with the LEGO bricks.
This new Smart Play technology has been designed as a completely screen-free way to make playing with LEGO more interactive. What is LEGO Smart Play?
LEGO Smart Play is new interactive technology that users sensors, speakers and the new LEGO Smart Brick to create real-life lights and sound effects as you play,
According to LEGO, the system uses three elements: the Smart Brick, Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags and includes more than 20 patented technologies, all designed to make the toys respond in real time. That means engines roar when ships move, lightsabers hum during battles, and scenes change depending on which characters are involved.
LEGO has made it clear that no screens or AI have been used in the product at all, and that all effects are being automatically generated in real time. According to Wired, LEGO “insists there are no pre-recorded clips of lightsabers or other pieces of audio being used as a cheat.”
The Smart Bricks are powered by an internal battery designed to last for years, and it charges wirelessly on a dedicated charging pad.
Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President at the LEGO Group said: “The launch of LEGO Smart Play brings creativity, technology, and storytelling together to make building worlds and stories even more engaging, and all without a screen. We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year.”
