Summary

As the harvest ends, Stella and George Ellis follow their long-held tradition of hanging a corn doll to mark its close. However, this simple ritual takes a darker turn when the doll mysteriously falls and a figure dressed as the mythical Cornman strikes. With their milk ruined and their hay set ablaze, the Ellises are pushed to the brink. Meanwhile, Martha and Humphrey embark on a new chapter as foster parents when Rosie begins her first day at Shipton Abbott Primary, while Anne takes a bold step to embrace life fully. Drama, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton, with guest star Caroline Quentin

Review

David Brown

Few statements in crime fiction have been as consequential as Sherlock Holmes’s remark inThe Adventure of the Copper Beeches about the “smiling countryside” being more dreadful and sinful than the vilest London alley.

Because ever since, writers of mystery drama have sought out the unsettling in rural traditions, the latest example being this episode of Beyond Paradise, which finds a farming family being terrorised by a figure dressed as a mythical Cornman who’s setting hay bales ablaze.

Now, I say “terrorised”, but to be honest, the average episode of 1970s’ Worzel Gummidge featured more in the way of straw-based scares. And while it’s undoubtedly fun witnessing Humphrey (Kris Marshall) and his team trying to work out who is behind this campaign of sabotage, the masked bogeyman they’re pursuing looks like they’ve cosplayed as the Scarecrow from Batman and got lost on the way to Comic Con. Perhaps the Cornman failed to add eyeholes to their hessian sack?
