The Scarlet Witch – otherwise known as Wanda Maximoff – has become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most intriguing and complex characters. Following her starring roles in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, speculation has been rife about whether Elizabeth Olsen’s formidable witch will return in her own solo film.

While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm a Scarlet Witch movie, rumblings behind the scenes and the character’s enduring popularity have kept fans on the edge of their seats. With Olsen herself expressing a willingness to reprise the role if the story is right, and reports suggesting scriptwriters may be attached, it seems that the possibility of a solo outing for Wanda is far from dead.

So, what do we actually know about a potential Scarlet Witch film – and what could it look like? Here’s everything we’ve managed to uncover so far.

Will there be a Scarlet Witch movie?

As of now, Marvel Studios has not officially announced a Scarlet Witch solo film. However, reports have surfaced suggesting that a project centred on Wanda Maximoff may be in early development, with Jac Schaeffer and Megan McDonnell – both of whom have previous Marvel writing credentials – said to be penning a script.

No official confirmation has been given by Marvel or Disney, and there has been no mention of a director or a production start date.

Elizabeth Olsen, who has portrayed Wanda since Avengers: Age of Ultron, has been candid about her openness to return to the character, provided the story does her justice. She has described playing Scarlet Witch as “fun” and “ridiculous”, and has stated she would “jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again” if the project felt right.

However, Olsen has also made clear that she currently has no Marvel projects lined up and is focusing on other work, particularly projects with a guaranteed theatrical release.

When could a Scarlet Witch movie release?

With no official green light, release date speculation is the name of the game. Should the project move forward, it is unlikely that a Scarlet Witch film would arrive before late 2027 at the earliest. Marvel’s upcoming slate is already packed, with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for 2026 and 2027 respectively.

Olsen has stated she will not be in London for the filming of those Avengers movies, as she is committed to other projects.

If a solo Scarlet Witch film is indeed in development, the earliest fans could expect to see it would be after the current Phase 6 concludes, possibly as the MCU embarks on a new era. For now, it remains a waiting game, with no date set in stone.

Who could return for a Scarlet Witch movie?

Should the film go ahead, Elizabeth Olsen would be the obvious – and arguably essential – choice to reprise the role of Wanda Maximoff. Olsen has expressed affection for the character and a willingness to return, provided the story is compelling. Beyond Olsen, there is no confirmed information about any returning or new cast members.

Given the character’s ties to Doctor Strange and the magical side of the MCU, it is possible that figures such as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange or Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness could appear, but this is pure speculation.

The events of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have left Wanda’s fate ambiguous, with her apparent death in the latter leaving the door open for a dramatic return.

If the film materialises, it could explore Wanda’s quest for redemption, her mastery of chaos magic, or even her search for her child, Tommy (Speed), who is still lost. The possibilities are wide open – but until Marvel makes it official, fans will have to make do with theories and wishful thinking.
