The upcoming movie, which comes from a script penned by Drew Goddard based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir, stars Gosling as bookish school-teacher turned astronaut Ryland Grace, as he wakes up on a space station with no recollection of who he is or how he got there.

As he works to uncover his identity, he realises he’s the only person who can save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe.

However, an unexpected connection soon makes him see he might not have to do it alone.

Meet Rocky, the five-legged alien that appears in the new footage (scroll down for more on the trailer).

Speaking about what fans can expect from the film, Lord previously said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter): "The movie is genre defying. It’s emotional and it is funny and it’s big and the stakes couldn’t be higher – I’ve never seen a great drama that didn’t make me laugh and I’ve never seen great comedy that didn’t make me cry."

Miller added: "The relationship between Grace and Rocky is the heart of the movie. It’s a story about collaboration and cooperation, and what’s possible if we work together. Ideally, you walk out of the movie feeling more hopeful than when you came in."
