Shane Meadows was a teenage fan when the Stone Roses shook the world with their potent blend of psychedelic rock and swaggering Mancunian groove, but he never saw them live. Therefore, this potentially conventional feature-length chronicle of their 2011/12 reunion becomes something more personal. Shadowing the well-preserved four-piece on the road to triumphant shows at Greater Manchester's Heaton Park - via rehearsals, a joyous secret gig in Warrington and some bumpy European warm-ups - Meadows gains access all areas, his camera often skulking in corridors and dressing rooms. The band are at the top of their game musically, but Meadows puts the largely middle-aged fans centre stage; their heart-warming stories dominating the Warrington section. Eschewing obligatory talking heads (the band's backstory is told via archive interview) and with footnotes to camera provided by the wide-eyed director himself,
Made of Stone
replaces hagiography with infectious empathy. It all makes for a witty, honest and valuable tribute.
