Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Marital problems assail a would-be playwright and her part-time DJ hubby in this Welsh-set comedy drama, a fourth British indie in four years from writer/director Jamie Adams. In the central role, Jemima Kirke essays another exasperatingly flaky young woman (not a million miles from the role she played on HBO's Girls), and manages to remain hugely irritating yet compulsively watchable despite the film's failings. Beardy teddy-bear type Richard Elis proves unbelievably indulgent as her long-suffering other half, and though there's some mild fun at the expense of Kirke's theatrical affectations, the wonky, ill-focused plot is on a fool's mission asking us to care about these shambling, self-involved millennials. Hard to forgive the film for wasting the inestimable Joanna Scanlan in a barely-there role as Elis's deep-pocketed mum, though live-wire Alice Lowe provides a brief highlight as an egotistical theatre administrator drawn to Kirke's work (but mainly her body). A flimsy diversion, overall.
