Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

British-Nigerian director Shola Amoo (A Moving Image) draws on his own life for this heartfelt exploration of race, identity and belonging. For young Femi, loving foster care in rural Lincolnshire is abruptly replaced by an inner-city London flat with his martinet birth mother, Yinka (Gbemisola Ikumelo). The combination of culture shock and Yinka's brutality drive Femi (played as an adolescent by Sam Adewunmi) into brooding introspection, which soon has the teenager torn between a life of crime with a local gang or opening up to a sensitive, straight-talking teacher (Nicholas Pinnock). With its believable lead performances, this is a gentle coming-of-age tale without the usual clichés.
