This Gallic heist thriller from Romain Gavras boasts typical crime-saga style but it's rich with its own unique flavour. Set among France's ostracised immigrant communities,
The World Is Yours
benefits from a heavy dose of irreverence, a smattering of pathos and a pleasingly diverse ensemble, while riffing smartly on real-world tensions. Its amiable lead, Fares (Karim Leklou), is the antithesis of cool - a mummy's boy whose face is a mask of weary compliance and barely contained exasperation. Looking for a way out of his life of crime, he's developed a plan to bring ice pops to North Africa but first must travel to Spain to negotiate a drug deal. Gavras keeps the shenanigans coming and utilises his star assets well - Isabelle Adjani and Vincent Cassel are cast amusingly against type as Fares's hard-faced, flamboyantly attired safecracker of a mother and his loyal but idiotic father-figure, while Francois Damiens and British actor Sam Spruell feature. It all adds up to a colourful, enjoyably chaotic story of a group of less-than-capable crooks.
