Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Diego Armando Maradona is considered one of the greatest football players in the history of the game. Unfortunately, his career was tarnished by a series of scandals and controversial incidents. This archive-based documentary from Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) celebrates Maradona's mesmerising talent on the pitch, but it doesn't shy away from the controversies or excuse his behaviour. Focusing on his time with Napoli between 1984 and 1991, the film documents the highs (leading Napoli to the Serie A title for the first time, winning the World Cup in 1986) and the lows (too many to mention). Essentially, it is two hours of archive footage and old home movies, accompanied by audio interviews with Maradona and people who know him. Some of the footage is revealing, but Kapadia's portrait lacks variety (there are only so many old video clips you can watch), and it is too long. Still, Maradona is a fascinating, magnetic individual, even if he remains ultimately elusive and unknowable. Perhaps that is part of his appeal.
