Tom & Jerry: the Movie

Kids will be delighted, adults a little less so, with this CGI and live-action blend from Tim Story (Ride Along), which transplants the escapades of the icon cartoon enemies to New York City. Happily, it has a game and comedically on point Chloë Grace Moretz as young chancer Kayla, who cons her way into a job at the Royal Gate Hotel after duping Rob Delaney's dopey manager. But the hotel turns out to have a vermin problem that only a feline sidekick can fix. As Kayla and Tom team up against the mischievous Jerry, they find themselves being shadowed by Michael Peña's suspicious colleague, with preparations for a lavish celebrity wedding as the backdrop. It's a peppy and polished enough production, if one that suffers slightly from the repetitive nature of the animated antics. But while the thinly sketched story is brazenly unimaginative, screenwriter Kevin Costello (Brigsby Bear) throws in the odd, welcomely surreal gag, and the cast keep things solidly watchable.
