Big Stone Gap

If you're a fan of either Ashley Judd or Whoopi Goldberg, here's an amiable if slightly schmaltzy distraction for you. The project was actually a labour of love for co-star Patrick Wilson, whose father grew up in Virginia's Appalachian Mountains where the story is set (he has a small cameo), and who helped writer/director and long-time friend Adriana Trigiani put the project together - the film is based on her 2001 romantic novel. Judd is the small-town pharmacist who uncovers a long-buried secret about her family, not realising it will have implications for who she really is. Judd and Goldberg are joined by an impressive roster of TV faces including Jenna Elfman, Anthony LaPaglia and Jane Krakowski in a tale that's heart-warming, despite being comfortably predictable.
