Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Having given us (The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Coraline), Laika studios delivers a film that tops the lot in terms of sheer laugh-out-loud comedy. Written and directed by storyboarder Chris Butler, this is a ripping Victorian yarn that treks from London to the Himalayas via the Pacific Northwest, powered along by Carter Burwell's lively score. Hugh Jackman voices explorer Sir Lionel Frost, who has something to prove to his geographical society (led by a sclerotic Stephen Fry), and defies doubters by tracking down a Bigfoot-style beast (Zach Galifianakis) in the company of a doughty map-reader (Zoe Saldana). Missing Link may lack the emotional depth of the award-winning Kubo, but it compensates with plenty of dizzying Keystone Cops-style slapstick.
