Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this update of the 1972 blaxploitation classic, Trevor Jackson confidently strides into the role of Youngblood Priest, a career criminal looking to get out of the game with one last payday. But his enemies, and friends, aren't making that easy. Lacking the cultural commentary that defined the original movie, this prioritises flashy cars and thumping beats over anything deeper. However, there's substance to match the style in the form of a solid and entertaining story, which wraps the "one last job" scenario in enough intrigue to make the outcome worth sticking around for. Jackson is engrossing in the lead, with a swagger that makes his elaborate schemes believable. Meanwhile, support from the likes of Michael Kenneth Williams and Jason Mitchell, as Priest's mentor and ally respectively, make his world more interesting. It's not as memorable as the film that inspired it, but Superfly has enough action and flair to be more than another dreary remake.
