Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Picking up a few years after the first exciting adventure, this sturdy sequel finds teenage Viking Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his dragon pal Toothless exploring lands far from their home village, and meeting a dizzying array of friends, foes and family members, both dragon and human. It's a story crammed with set pieces that exploits the 3D format with maximum inventiveness, all aerial battles and coming-at-you swoops, although in some ways the quieter, character-led moments are the most effective ones. Arguably, there are a few too many characters but the addition of Hiccup's long-lost mother Valka (Cate Blanchett) as a sort of Dian Fossey-like dragon-whisperer is welcome. All in all, it's less kiddie-friendly than the 2010 original, being sadder and darker (think Bambi), but it has a richness that's highly compelling, especially in the way it explores the complex relationship between man and beast.
