Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The 2016 Suicide Squad film may have left critics cold but Margot Robbie's spunky take on the Joker's murderous moll Harley Quinn has made the Gotham bad girl a hot Hollywood property. Appropriate, then, that this refreshingly fun cartoon to mark the 25th anniversary of DC's ground-breaking Batman: the Animated Series should put the fan favourite centre stage - after all, her first appearance anywhere was in the episode, Joker's Favor. Here, Harley has given up her felonious ways until she's persuaded to help Batman stop botanic baddies the Floronic Man and Poison Ivy (Harley's BFF) from turning everyone into plant people. With terrific animation that harks back to the halcyon days of the original 90s TV show, and Kevin Conroy again voicing the Caped Crusader, there's a lovingly nostalgic feel to proceedings. However, the humour is saucier and the content more adult than usual, as one night-time encounter between Bat sidekick Nightwing and the Maid of Mischief demonstrates. Kudos should also go to The Big Bang Theory's Melissa Rauch, who's got Harley's bubbly Brooklyn twang down to a tee (in the fine tradition of original Harley, Arleen Sorkin), even when belting out a version of 1970s hit Hanging on the Telephone.
