When Jimmy Doherty was at the helm this was a science-based show that offered foodie facts in a digestible format. Stefan Gates (he of Cooking in the Danger Zone) has taken over and, while the food elements are still there, it’s all MUCH JOLLIER, WACKIER AND A LOT LOUDER. This is partly because in this first edition his guest food technologists are Anton Du Beke and Jodie Prenger. Irritatingly, they grin, gurn and shriek their way through what is an interesting experiment to make orange squash.
If you can get past all the hyped-up fake bonhomie, the kernel of the show – what goes into our everyday food – is still a hugely enjoyable watch.
About this programme
1/6. Self-confessed foodie Stefan Gates takes over from former presenter Jimmy Doherty to reveal the secrets of mass-produced meals - by tearing them apart and making his own from scratch in his barn workshop. In the first show, he challenges dancer Anton Du Beke and actress Jodie Prenger to make rival bottles of orange squash, explores whether instant tomato soup contains real tomatoes and tests how much seawater is needed to make sea-salt.
