Match of the Day pundit Michael Carrick has said he is "enjoying some time out at the moment" in response to suggestions that he could be in line to replace Vitor Pereira at Wolves.

The Premier League club sacked the Portuguese coach after Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Fulham, which left them bottom of the table and eight points adrift of safety after failing to win any of their first 10 games of the 2025/26 campaign.

Among the candidates reportedly being considered to replace Pereira at Molineux are Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards, former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil, and Carrick.

The latter has been out of a job since he was sacked by Boro at the end of last season, after finishing 10th and missing the play-offs for a second consecutive year.

Carrick, who cut his teeth as a coach at Old Trafford after ending his playing career at Man Utd, impressed early on at the Riverside but struggled to maintain that momentum in his first full-time role in management.

Match of the Day host Mark Chapman quizzed the 44-year-old on reports linking him with the Wolves job on the Sunday night broadcast (BBC One, 10:30pm) and whether he was interested in returning to the dugout.

"You trying to get rid of me, are you?" he joked.

"No, I'm enjoying some time out at the moment. I think I'm probably watching as much football now as I've ever watched with a free eye.

"I'm still learning, still trying to improve from that side of things, but I'm enjoying doing things like this, you know, it's a change, and spending time with the family. Then, I'll see what is next."

Wolves are thought to be keen to name a replacement for Pereira promptly but it remains to be seen whether they will make an appointment ahead of their next game.

The Black Country outfit travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday evening (8pm, Sky Sports Main Event and Premier League) in the last round of fixtures before the November international break.

Match of the Day is available to watch back on BBC iPlayer.
