Wedding bells chime in the not-so-distant future for Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) and Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin), and it's now been confirmed that Hazlegrove has signed a new Corrie contract that will see her remain on the soap for the time being.

Speaking to My Weekly (via The Sun), Jane revealed: "I only came into Coronation Street for 10 episodes to get a new bathroom.

"I’d run out of money and when they said, 'Will you come and do Corrie for a bit?' I thought, 'Yes! That will pay for a nice white suite!'

"I’ve been here for six years now and I’ve just signed for another year. It’s a lovely place to work. I feel very blessed."

That means that there will be plenty more of Bernie on our screens for the foreseeable, a welcome bit of good news amid some of the more recent axes on the soap.

There's plenty to anticipate in the coming days as it relates to Bernie and Dev, though, with the pair set to be hitched in a colourful and lavish ceremony.

However, trouble is set to strike as first-look pictures reveal that Bernie will collapse on her wedding day.

Dev's daughter Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) will come to Bernie's aid while her daughter Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) calls an ambulance.

With her fate hanging in the balance and Dev trying to gather the family at the hospital, things don't exactly look good for Bernie.

But with the actor's contract having been renewed, surely that only spells good things on the horizon, or perhaps a deeper dive into whatever has caused her collapse.

Hazlegrove actually first appeared in Coronation Street as a different character back in 1985, but came bursting back onto the cobbles in 2019 as Bernie Winter, the no-nonsense mother of Gemma.

Having been a series regular ever since, Hazlegrove is also known for her role in Casualty as Kathleen 'Dixie' Dixon, having also had parts in Silent Witness, Buried, London's Burning and Clink.
