Prime Video is set to adapt Sony Santa Monica's recent 2018 reboot of the franchise, with a particular focus on the Norse storyline.

Walger has been cast as one of the show's leads, Freya, the goddess of love, and will act opposite Ryan Hurst's protagonist, the Spartan Kratos, Callum Vinson, who plays his son Atreus, and Ed Skrein, who will be taking on the villainous role of Baldur.

Walger, who is perhaps best known as Penny Widmore in the ABC drama series Lost, has also appeared in the likes of For all Mankind, The Mind of the Married Man and FlashForward.

Walger's character Freya is described as a Vanir goddess, once queen of the Valkyries and former wife of Odin.

She is a powerful practitioner of Vanir magic and was exiled to Midgard under a curse that prevents her from harming any living creature, also meaning she is unable to fight or defend herself.

Following her exile, she lives reclusively in the woods of Midgard, aiding Kratos and Atreus. She is feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.

Walger will join Hurst and Vinson in the cast alongside the likes of Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Thor), Teresa Palmer (Sif), Max Parker (Heimdall), Alastair Duncan (Memir), Jeff Gulka (Sindri) and Danny Woodburn (Brok).

God of War is a 2018 video game from Sony and follows Kratos, now living in the realm of Norse gods, as he sets out on a journey with his young son, Atreus, to fulfil his late wife's wish of scattering her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms.

Amazon has already renewed God of War for a second season, with Outlander creator Ronald D Moore at the helm, and Shōgun director Frederick EO Toye set to direct the first two episodes.
