A live-action series starring everyone's favourite ghost is in the works at Disney Plus after a competitive five-way bidding war.

Steven Spielberg, who worked on the iconic 1995 movie, is set to return as executive producer, with Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston (who are executive producers of Disney Plus's Goosebumps series) writing the series and also serving as executive producers.

According to Deadline, the series is set to be a modern update on Casper's story, with a "darker edge", a with it being compared to how Netflix's Wednesday took on the Addams Family tale – so it could be a very interesting tone change for our friendly ghost!

The new series is only in the early stages of development at the moment, so it's not confirmed to go to series.

Casper first floated onto our screens in Famous Studios' animated movies, released between 1945 and 1959.

Since then, the friendly ghost has been the star of comic books, animated TV series, and the 1995 movie, which starred Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa, with Malachi Pearson voicing Casper.

It's not yet confirmed who could star in the series, although Sawa previously told People: “I think I've definitely outgrown Casper."

He added of his bond with co-star Ricci: “I bump into her every once in a while, and it's like we haven't skipped a beat. She's great and I'm so proud of her for all the amazing things she's doing.”
