Power fans will be pleased to know that they won't be bidding farewell to the drama anytime soon as a brand new prequel series has just been confirmed.

It's now been announced that Power: Origins is officially a-go after it was previously rumoured that the series was in development. The new prequel series will dig into the past of Ghost and Tommy, the two lead characters that were originated in the original series by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora.

While neither leading role has been confirmed just yet in the prequel series, we know they'll be following in some pretty major footsteps set by Hardwick and Sikora in the original show.

However, we do know that there will be one familiar face, as it's been confirmed that young Kanan Stark star MeKai Curtis will reprise his role in Origins, with the role having originally been played by 50 Cent.

Raising Kanan creator Sascha Penn has been confirmed as the showrunner, writer and executive producer of Origins, which will become Power's fifth TV series.

On the announcement of Origins, Penn said in a statement: “I’m excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the PowerUniverse’s founding fathers.

“Ghost and Tommy’s backstories have fueled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I’m thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won’t see coming.”

The show’s logline states that Origins is a "fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time in the Powerfranchise, which will highlight the unbridled audacity of young men on the rise, determined to become legends in the game".

Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for Starz, also said on the announcement of the series: “Our fans have been asking for Ghost and Tommy’s origins story since we first met them in Power – and with the launch of this series, we’re delivering in a big way.

“This marks an electrifying new chapter in the franchise’s evolution as we dive deep into the legacy of these iconic characters and the explosive moments that shaped their path.”

With Penn's Raising Kanan having recently wrapped up season 4 on quite the cliffhanger, there's plenty more to hash out in the earlier years of these protagonists and so, it remains to be seen what crossover characters there may be in Raising Kanan and Origins.

Shameik Moore had appeared in the season 4 finale of Raising Kanan as Breeze, the drug kingpin who Kanan, Ghost and Tommy had all worked for before the start of the original Power show, but who was killed before those events.

So, it seems very likely that Breeze will continue forming an integral part of the Raising Kanan storyline and may very well make an appearance in Origins, depending on the outcome of his ongoing plot line.

With Raising Kanan ending with its fifth and final season, fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to its final outing as well as Origins to see just how the dramatic series will continue the story of Ghost and Tommy.

As of now, no further casting has been announced and it's been reported that casting for Ghost and Tommy is ongoing. So, watch this space!

Power Book III: Raising Kanan seasons 1-4 are available to watch on MGM+ through Amazon Prime Video in the UK, and on Starz in the US.
