At some point in every parent's lives, they've got to cut the strings and let their children go out into the world and spread their wings – something that Joanna Scanlan's Sarah is getting to grips with in 5's new thriller, Missed Call.

The upcoming series debuts next week but Radio Times has an exclusive first look at the five-parter, which boasts a picturesque escape to the sunny South of France.

However, as evidenced by the clip in question, not everything may be quite what it seems.

In the clip (which you can watch above), single mother Sarah is seen eating her cereal in dreary England by herself while her daughter Katie (Emily Coates) has just touched down in France to stay at a French student's home in a school exchange programme.

The stunning surroundings certainly are a world away from Sarah's own home, with Katie video calling her mother so that she can appreciate how grand it all is too.

Katie then introduces her mother to the family she's staying with, the Morvan's. Sitting down to eat breakfast, they seem picture-perfect as Caroline (Célia Diane) takes the lead and gets chatting to Sarah. She's then introduced to Emma (Lya Lessert) who doesn't appear all that interested and a chatty Fabien (Nicolas Van Beveren) who enquires about the English weather.

Sarah alerts the family to Katie's picky eating, something that Fabien brushes away as a minor problem and says that they'll get Katie eating French food in no time. But when they disconnect the call and Sarah is left by herself, she starts to look slightly uneasy.

Could she be overthinking letting her daughter go to another country? Or are her gut instincts starting to kick in?

We do know that things are set to go seriously awry as Sarah takes matters into her own hands once Katie goes missing. As per the synopsis for Missed Call: "Set against the backdrop of a picturesque French village, Missed Call follows single mother Sarah, whose world is upended after receiving a late-night missed call from her teenage daughter, Katie, while she’s on a school exchange.
"When Sarah arrives in France, she finds the host family and local authorities disturbingly indifferent to Katie’s disappearance. As Sarah refuses to accept their complacency, her search for her daughter spirals into a gripping and dangerous race against time."

Of course, Scanlan is known for a variety of roles over the years, but is leading the cast of this 5 thriller, which also stars Claire Keim (Vise le Coeur), Rupert Graves (Sherlock), François-Xavier Demaison (Disparue) and Robert Lindsay (Sherwood).

Missed Call will air on 5 on Monday 13 April at 9pm.
