The third and final run of the series, which was last on our screens with season 2 in 2017, is set to begin shooting this spring.

The update was announced in a caption on a post on BBC iPlayer’s official Instagram account, which also featured a photo of Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor – who will be returning as Gemma Foster, Simon and Tom respectively – reuniting for a read-through of the script.

The first season of Doctor Foster premiered in 2015, revolving around Jones's doctor character Gemma as she began to suspect her husband Simon of having an affair and enacted a masterful revenge plan, and soon became a huge success for the BBC.

Season 2 picked up a few years after the events of season 1, with Simon's new relationship with Kate (Jodie Comer) continuing to take its toll on Gemma.

The official synopsis for season 3 teases new beginnings for Gemma as she prepares to tie the knot with someone new.

It reads: "10 years ago, on discovering her husband Simon was having an affair, Gemma Foster enacted a masterful revenge. But the fallout was devastating when her 15-year-old son Tom disappeared."

It continues: "Now, in series three, Gemma is still a GP, still in the same house, but on the brink of a fresh start: she has met someone new and is getting married. But as the wedding day draws closer, and friends and family gather, shadows from the past begin to re-emerge threatening both her happiness and her reputation.

"As Gemma fights to protect those she loves and expose whoever’s intent on hurting her, will she be able to put the past to bed, dispense justice, and claim the future she deserves, before it is too late?"

Doctor Foster season 3 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Seasons 1-2 are available to stream on iPlayer now.
