Damien Molony is back on the island of Jersey for a second series of Bergerac, but has revealed to Radio Times that he wouldn’t hesitate to return to the Yorkshire Dales to film more episodes of hit comedy Brassic if he was given the chance.

The Irish actor starred alongside Joe Gilgun, Michelle Keegan and Ryan Sampson in the first four seasons of the Sky One series as Vinnie’s (Gilgun) best friend Dylan, before his character was kidnapped and eventually killed off.

Brassic ran for three more seasons, with Dylan often mentioned by his friends in later episodes, and Molony said that if there was a way of bringing his character back, he would be on board.

"Working on Brassic was a wonderful experience. You know, I say ‘working’ – [being with] those people, it never felt like work in a million years," he said.

"We cried laughing every single day on that show. I really loved my time on it. And I always thought getting killed off was a great way to say goodbye. But I always thought there was also an opportunity for Joe [as Vinnie] to have flashbacks, to have memories with Dylan in them."

Explaining how his character could return, he added: "Joe [Gilgun] had this wonderful idea of us all going on a group swim, finding a river with a waterfall to go for a swim together," he added. "That would be a kind of beautiful little flashback if they ever decided to bring Dylan back for a little bit. I know I would jump at the chance to see that gang again, and to laugh with them. We laughed for four seasons."

Molony revealed that he and Gilgun did discuss the possibility of a potential follow-up to the Brassic TV series.

"Joe often thought about if we ever did a follow up, he had wanted to do a film of it," Molony said. "In it we go to Turkey as a group for him to get a hair transplant! I thought that would be absolutely brilliant. Even if I wasn’t in it, I would be tuning in to watch that."

There are currently no plans for a return to Brassic. Star and co-creator of the series, Joe Gilgun is concentrating on his career as an artist while writer and co-creator Danny Brocklehurst is filming a new series called The Driver, Molony, meanwhile, has scored a big success as widowed detective Jim Bergerac in the UKTV reboot of classic 1980s cop series Bergerac.

In the new second season, he has been joined by two new guest stars, actors Adrian Edmondson and Lesley Sharp, who Molony describes as "really, really wonderful actors".

Sharp plays a woman who is key to the murder Jim is investigating, while Edmondson is the new boyfriend of Jim’s mother in law, Charlie (Zoe Wanamaker).

"Adrian's character is so adorable and so lovable, and he’s such a perfect foil to Zoe's Charlie, who is frosty and no nonsense, and conscious of what the island thinks about her. So seeing those two types of characters play off against each other was really interesting," said Molony.

"Adrian was so sinister in Alien: Earth and then is just so wonderfully kind and sweet and so perfect to soften the sharper edges of Charlie Hungerford in this. It's really a master stroke in casting and writing and acting. And then Lesley is so caring and maternal. I've watched so many of their individual TV shows so a chance to get to work with them was really exciting."
