US comedy show Saturday Night Live opened with an emotional tribute to Paris last night.

NBC's sketch and variety programme began with cast member Cecily Strong delivering a message of solidarity in both English and French.

"Paris is the city of light, and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out," she said. "Our love and support is with everyone there tonight. We stand with you.”

The moving moment drew comparisons with the long-running show's return to the airwaves after the September 11 attacks on New York in 2001.

That episode, which aired a fortnight after the attack on the World Trade Centre, began with a message from New York's then Mayor Rudy Giuliani, followed by Paul Simon playing The Boxer while wearing a New York fireman's hat.
