Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

Behind the scenes of three preserved steam railway lines - the South Devon Railway heritage line, the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highlands Railway and the Great Central Railway. Sports scientist Megan Smith has a dream of tending the fire of a steam locomotive on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, and she stokes the bolier of NG143 and sets off along the 25 miles from Caernarfon to Porthmadog

Review

The UK’s steam enthusiasts are lovely folk, if this straightforward and entirely pleasant new series is any guide. Stars of the show tonight are Cedric, 80, and his shovel-toting 22-year-old apprentice Megan, who are tasked with maintaining 170 pounds per square inch of pressure in the engine of a locomotive on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways. Under Cedric’s friendly but exacting tutelage, Megan will be a fully trained firewoman in no time.

Elsewhere in a show that amounts to a tour of some of Britain’s nicest countryside, we pootle up and down south Devon and deepest Leicestershire, picking up expertise about signals, sleepers and the best way to heat a sausage roll on a steam duct.
