After a long wait, Subnautica 2 is here, but you might be wondering if it's crossplay?

The game has a co-op mode, so you can dive into the depths with friends, but what if your friends aren't on the same platform as you?

So, for the rundown on Subnautica 2 crossplay and how cross-platform multiplayer works, here's what you need to know.

Is Subnautica 2 crossplay? Multiplayer across platforms explained

Yes, Subnautica 2 has full crossplay support across PC and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

That being said, if you're playing on different platforms, playing co-op isn't as simple as just sending a Steam invite over – instead, you need to use the Friend Code system.

To play together, one of you first needs to host a game. From the start screen, select 'Host Multiplayer' to create a world.

Once you're in the game, open up the menu and select your 'Friends List'. At the top of your screen, you'll see two boxes related to Friend Codes.

Get your friend to open up their Friends List, and copy their Friend Code from the top of their screen.

In your game, paste their Friend Code into the second text box and hit 'Add Friend'.

Now, scroll down on your list of friends until you see who you want to invite – the icon on the left will indicate if they are playing on Xbox or Steam.

Hover over their name and select the 'Invite' action to invite them to the game. Then, they simply have to accept it and they'll be in!

It should be noted that, while there is cross-platform multiplayer in Subnautica 2, this is only for a maximum of four players at a time. Any more than that, and regardless of what platform you're playing on, you're out of luck, we're afraid!
