The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV may struggle with performance in certain areas, director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) has confirmed.

During the keynote speech to open this weekend's Anaheim Fan Festival, it was confirmed that FF14 would be coming to Switch 2, the first time the game has appeared on a Nintendo console.

Following the reveal, Yoshi-P told a press conference at the Anaheim Fan Festival that the team was working to ensure the highest possible performance, but that there likely would be some issues regardless.

"I want to be honest with you, we are working really hard on the optimisation," he said, on the topic of the console's specs, continuing, "We are striving to get the best performance."

He noted that, in certain areas, players may see framerate drops, explaining, "I think with the towns, you may see a lower framerate, only because there are so many players that are rendered on the screen."

He did, however, confirm that "We are still able to reach 30 frames per second in a stable state, and so, considering Duty content, I think the performance is something that you don't have to be concerned about."

While framerate issues may be a hard line for some, Yoshi-P also explained why he was so excited to see the game come to the console later this year.

"The Nintendo Switch 2 is a wonderful console, and I think you can choose the way you want to play," he noted, referencing the differences between docked and handheld mode, and the availability of mouse controls.

"You are more free to choose which mode to play in, so I hope that players will find the way to play that is most suited for themselves."

The Switch 2 edition of the game is but one of the major announcements to come out of Friday's keynote speech, with the reveal of the next expansion, Evercold, taking the headlines, alongside a new Evangelion crossover.

Final Fantasy XIV comes to the Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026.
